Originality or innovation, as you put it, is the key to the success of this film.tom hylandhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15059595835440742055noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2804657780857817119.post-61218556748125521892012-01-02T16:49:17.377-08:002012-01-02T16:49:17.377-08:00I'm with you. It makes it an innovative film for the 21st century. In this age of sequels and superhero movies and movies based on graphic novels, how refreshingly innovative is that!Richard Bellamyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12397053921647421425noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2804657780857817119.post-6639774286555861072012-01-02T15:50:08.972-08:002012-01-02T15:50:08.972-08:00Hokahey:

I've read some pretty picky reviews of this film where a few writers have said it's not totally loyal to the silent film genre. Who said it had to be? Hazanivicius has made a lovely original work.

Interesting thoughts on the "Vertigo" music from you. I must admit that I am a devoted fan of original film music, so I may be more sensitive to this issue. I wish it wasn't there, but the music is deeply emotional and did fit the sequence.

I'll post soon on the marvelous original scores from this year, such as "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows 2" from Alexandre Desplat as well as "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" from Alberto Iglesias as well as a few others. 2011 marked a return to beautiful original scores for the movies!tom hylandhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15059595835440742055noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2804657780857817119.post-42641314910895980032012-01-02T14:54:55.612-08:002012-01-02T14:54:55.612-08:00Tom, this is a great film, and I enjoyed your revi...Tom, this is a great film, and I enjoyed your review.

I'm glad you commented about the use of the Vertigo music. As it happened, my mind raced through thoughts about how pointedly clever but unoriginal that was - but at the same time I responded very emotionally to it because, like you, I knew the allusion and all the emotion and meaning behind the allusion and this gave that moment in the film a very dramatic impact. So, for me, it didn't take me out of The Artist. It made that moment in the film one of the best of the year! Still, at the same time, it's kind of a cheesy gimmick: use someone else's meaningful music and pump up the meaning of your scene. What if every filmmaker decided to do that? But it might not always work for every filmmaker. Here, in keeping with all the other allusions to Citizen Kane and other classic films, it really worked for me.Richard Bellamyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12397053921647421425noreply@blogger.com
